Welcome to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, a country with outstanding ancient history, biblical sites of importance and beautiful desert landscapes. The white stone city of Amman is the capital of Jordan. Upon arrival into Amman airport, an A&K airport representative will be waiting to assist with entry visa and immigration requirements and connecting you with your private car transfer to Petra. Enroute to Petra (approx. 60 minutes’), we will stop at the vista point, Mount Nebo.

Mount Nebo is a revered mountain in Jordan offering sweeping views over the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea, traditionally believed to be the place where Moses was granted a view of the Promised Land. Nowadays the mountain is a memorial site. Here is where the “Church of Moses”, was built by the first Christians. Ever since the first days of Christianity this mountain has been a holy place and a destination for pilgrimage. Like Moses, you will experience the great view over Jordan, the Dead Sea and Israel. When the weather is clear, it is possible to see Jerusalem. Afterwards, we continue to Madaba, (approx. 15 minutes’ drive).

Madaba is known as the ‘City of Mosaics’ for its wealth of beautiful Byzantine mosaics is one of the most memorable places in the holy land. Madaba’s chief attraction, a wonderfully vivid, 6th century Byzantine mosaic map showing Jerusalem and other holy sites is located in the contemporary Greek Orthodox church of St. George. With two million pieces of colored stone, 25x25 meters in its original state – most of which can still be seen today – the map depicts hills and valleys, villages and towns, as far away as the Nile Delta. This masterpiece is unrivalled in Jordan, but there are many other mosaics from the 5th - 7th centuries scattered throughout Madaba’s churches and homes.

Our lunch is at the Haret Jdoudna Restaurant in Madaba. Haret Jdoudna represents an authentic village in the city of Madaba, offering everything from amazing traditional food, to entertainment, to local crafts, mosaics, and souvenirs. The restaurant is a 19th century house, with historical-like rooms and floors. Its menu is absolutely exquisite, offering local mezza dishes and traditional local, oven-baked delicacies. Then continue our journey to Petra (approx. 2.5 hours’ drive).

Petra – Day 1 - Grand Entrance and Iconic Petra

A worldwide wonder, Petra is undoubtedly Jordan’s most treasured site. A vast, unique city carved into sheer rose-red rock by the Nabataeans, an industrious Arab civilisation who settled here over 2,000 years ago. Flourishing between around 800 BC and AD 100, Petra became a vital hub for silk, spice, and trade routes linking China, India, and southern Arabia with Egypt, Syria, Greece, and Rome. In this era Petra was a fortress, carved out of the jagged rocks in an area, which was virtually inaccessible. Covering approximately 100 square kilometres and home to more than 800 monuments, the city reached the height of its prominence under Roman influence before gradually declining as sea trade replaced caravan routes, eventually falling into obscurity until its rediscovery in 1812 by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt.

After breakfast at our hotel, we make our way to the Petra’s Visitor Centre, to commence our full day private escorted tour of the Grand Entrance and Iconic Petra. Our tour today, includes the Siq (dramatic canyon entrance), the Treasury (Al-Khazneh), Street of Facades, Colonnaded Street, Theatre and Royal Tombs.

We begin with an optional horse ride from the main gate of Petra to the entrance of the ancient city and then continue on foot through the Siq (entrance). The Siq is a spectacular natural gorge stretching over one kilometre, flanked by towering cliffs rising up to 80 metres. The walk itself is an unforgettable experience, with ever-changing colours and intricate rock formations guiding your path. As the gorge opens, you are rewarded with the breathtaking first glimpse of Al-Khazneh (the Treasury), Petra’s most iconic monument and a symbol of this extraordinary “rose-red city, half as old as time.” The Khazneh (the Treasury) is featured in the film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Our lunch stop is at the Basin Restaurant, located near the central basin area, about 1 mile inside the gates, in the heart of the ancient Rose City surrounding by the magnificent ruins of Petra. Its outdoor seating is surrounded by Petra’s mountains and ruins. After lunch, we walk out of the archeological site and return to the hotel. Our lunch stop is at the Basin Restaurant, located near the central basin area, about 1 mile inside the gates, in the heart of the ancient Rose City surrounding by the magnificent ruins of Petra. Its outdoor seating is surrounded by Petra’s mountains and ruins. After lunch, we walk out of the archeological site and return to the hotel.

After lunch we continue our tour to explore the marvels of Petra, including the Street of Facades, Colonnaded Street, Great Temple, Theatre and Royal Tombs.

Street of Facades

The Street of Facades is a striking avenue lined with towering rock-cut tombs, their monumental façades carved directly into the rose-hued cliffs. Believed to have been the final resting places of wealthy Nabataeans, these intricate yet less ornate structures offer a powerful sense of scale and craftsmanship. Walking along this route provides an intimate glimpse into the everyday life and social hierarchy of this ancient city.

Colonnaded Street

Once the bustling heart of Petra, the Colonnaded Street formed the city’s grand commercial thoroughfare. Flanked by columns and lined with shops, temples, and public buildings, it reflects strong Roman influence following their annexation of the region. Today, its remains evoke the vibrancy of a once-thriving urban centre, where traders and travellers from across the ancient world converged.

Great Temple

The Great Temple is one of the largest and most impressive archaeological complexes within Petra, reflecting the grandeur, sophistication, and urban planning of the Nabataean civilisation. Situated along Petra’s Colonnaded Street, the vast complex is believed to have served as an important ceremonial, administrative, or civic centre during the city’s height of prosperity between the 1st century BC and 1st century AD.

Theatre

Carved directly into the mountainside, Petra’s Theatre is a remarkable testament to Nabataean engineering and later Roman expansion. Originally built to seat around 4,000 spectators and later enlarged to accommodate up to 8,000, it hosted gatherings, performances, and civic events. Its unique setting—hewn entirely from rock—makes it one of the most distinctive theatres of the ancient world.

Royal Tombs

Overlooking the city centre, the Royal Tombs are among Petra’s most impressive and elaborate monuments. This series of grand burial sites—including the Urn, Silk, Corinthian, and Palace Tombs—showcases a blend of Nabataean and classical architectural styles. Their commanding position and intricate façades suggest they were reserved for Petra’s elite, offering both splendour and sweeping views across the valley.

Drinks and dinner this evening will inside a Nabatean Cave, know as The Cave Bar, located in the Petra Guest House a short walk from the hotel. The Cave Bar is reputed to be the oldest in the world. At the entrance to Petra, you find the Petra Guest House and next to this, a 2,000 year old Nabatean tomb, fronted with a large outdoor Piazza surrounded by original carved Nabatean stonework into which the Cave Bar is built. Inside ancient burial niches, cozy tables of two or three line the perimeter provide a unique dining experience and probably the most atmospheric place in Petra. The menu offers light fayre including high-quality mezze, grills and cocktails.

Petra – Day 2 – Monastery Ad-Deir, Plaza & Petra Museum

After breakfast at our hotel we join our guide to commence day 2 of our full-day private escorted tour of Petra. Today we explore the majestic Monastery, similar in design to the Treasury, but much larger (50m high x 45m wide) and much less decorated. To reach the Monastery Ad-Deir involves a hike of 800 steps and we have the option to take a donkey for part of the ascent if preferred.

The facade is flat on the lower level and deeply carved on the upper level, with engaged columns and two half-pediments flanking a central urn (10m high). The flat plaza in front was carved out of the rock, perhaps to accommodate crowds at religious ceremonies. It was originally surrounded by a colonnade. The interior consists of a single room with double staircases leading up to a niche (the same layout as in the Qasr al-Bint and the Temple of the Winged Lions). At the top of the plateau is a wide sandstone basin with benches of rock and natural ledges essentially a huge open canyon Amphitheatre. The massive façade of Ad Deir is 50m tall and carved into cliff. The wide mountain basin offers panoramic views stretching across Petra and is considers to be one of the most amazing ‘picnic’ spots given its remote, elevated location and this will be our lunch spot - the Ad Deir Plaza. After lunch we make our way back down the Siq to visit the Petra Museum.

Petra Museum

The Petra Museum provides a refined introduction to the history and culture of this extraordinary site. Through carefully curated exhibits, artefacts, and interactive displays, it traces Petra’s evolution from a thriving trade hub to a lost city rediscovered. A visit here enriches the experience, adding context and depth to the wonders encountered throughout the ancient landscape. After our visit to the Museum we continue our descent and return to the hotel.

Chocolate Hour!

The plan is to meet for Chocolate Hour from 16:00 – 17:00 at Al Multaqa Lobby Lounge, located in the Movenpick, to indulge in 60 mouth-watering minutes of complimentary chocolate indulgence.

Our dinner this evening is a unique offering from the Movenpick their ‘Stay and Cook with the Chef’ experience. Guests will be given expert guidance on how to prepare an authentic Jordanian three-course meal. Among the venues used for this cooking experience will be the resort’s tearoom with its Lawrence of Arabia theme, wicker chairs, wooden floors and amazing views of the Petra Hills. The Chef will introduce participants to the special elements of local cuisine by explaining culinary traditions and the selected ingredients.

After dinner our guides escorts us as we experience Petra by Night. A time honored walk through the Rose-Red city with the Siq lit by 2,000 candles. The special aura of the ancient Nabatean trading empire comes to life as we stroll through the mysterious Siq of Petra.

Petra – Little Petra

After breakfast at our hotel we join our guide and driver to commence day 3 of our private escorted tour of Petra which today features Little Petra. The drive takes around 25 minutes.

Al Beidha, Little Petra as it is also known, is hidden away in the center of a mountain just north of Petra. We take a hike through the narrow sandstone gorge to explore the carved façades, dwellings and painted rooms and see the main viewpoints and rock-cut chambers. This miniature version of Petra contains a number of notable tombs as well as a collection of stairs leading up to higher viewpoints. Like Petra, it is believed the site dates back to the first century and features some well-preserved structures. Archeologists believe this to have been a suburb of the larger city, perhaps where merchants lived.

After visiting Little Petra we have the option to return to Petra for lunch at Alqantarah Restaurant or take the Private Guided Walk to the High Place of Sacrifice and Wadi Farasa Trail.

Lunch is offered at Alqantarah Restaurant. ‘Alqantarah’, a classic Arabic word meaning ‘arch’, offers a unique dining experience with traditional Jordanian cuisine served in an authentic setting. At the heart of the experience is the Taboun - a traditional clay oven used to bake fresh bread and grill meats for dishes such as Mansaf, Magloubah, Kofteh and Kabab, freshly prepared while you watch. Meals are presented at your table in handmade pottery dishes, adding a distinctive local touch to the experience.

Optional Private Guided Walk: High Place of Sacrifice and Wadi Farasa Trail

Dinner will be in the Al Matal Tent located in the grounds of the hotel. Step into the warmth of Al Matal, a traditional Bedouin tent nestled beneath the open skies and majestic mountains of Petra. Unwind with aromatic shisha, rich local flavours, slow-cooked delicacies, grilled meats & traditional mezze; each dish a soulful tribute to Jordanian heritage. After dinner we return to our hotel.
